Tomonori Suzuki (Chijun Suzuki) (1909 – 2007)
While Tomonori’s name is pronounced “Tomonori,” it seems that, like Dr. Morita, he was also known as “Chijun,” using the on’yomi (Sino-Japanese reading) of the kanji characters.
He was born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1909 (Meiji 42). While in middle school (around age 14-15), he began to suffer from neurotic symptoms including severe insomnia, stomach discomfort, stuttering phobia, and intrusive thought phobia. He took a year off from school to focus on treatment, but his symptoms did not improve.
Later, he was deeply impressed by the writings of Shoma Morita, and went to Morita’s home and clinic, where he was admitted and underwent Morita therapy. His neurotic symptoms were completely cured in a short period of time.
He entered and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo), became a physician, and honed his skills under the guidance of Masatake Morita. In 1951, he opened his own Tomonori Suzuki Clinic and began practicing inpatient Morita therapy in earnest.
He passed away in 2007 at the age of 97.
Regarding the pronunciation of Mr. Tomonori Suzuki’s name:
Mr. Tomonori Suzuki’s name is pronounced “Tomonori,” but it seems that, like Dr. Morita, he was also sometimes referred to as “Chijun,” using the on’yomi (Sino-Japanese reading) of the kanji characters.
