Horney’s Theory 8

The title of Chapter 10 of “Neurosis and Human Growth” is “Pathological Dependence.”

Horney meticulously analyzes and presents the psychological process by which self-decreasing individuals seeking affection are attracted to and become dependent on particularly arrogant, proud, and arrogant-retaliation types.

Self-decreasing individuals see their own weaknesses reflected in other self-decreasing individuals, as if looking in a mirror, and may even feel repulsion when they become close.

Then, the arrogant, arrogant-retaliation type crushes the pride of the self-decreasing-dependent individual, causing them to feel insulted at first, but then become strongly attracted and infatuated.

This pathological dependent relationship is particularly clear between arrogant and shrinking types, and because the bond between them lasts longer than other types for psychological reasons on both sides, the conflict and problems deepen.

While there may be some elements of sadism in the arrogant type and masochism in the shrinking type in these relationships, these are only parts of the overall structure.
