As my university life lengthened due to repeated academic setbacks, my mental health, social anxiety disorder, and social life deteriorated.
Horney’s theory provided groundbreaking insights into my mental health and my own mental disorder, but at the time, it wasn’t very effective in terms of treatment or improvement.
I think I also began to rely on Morita therapy.
Here, I would like to mention some books on Morita therapy that I consider excellent based on my reading history.
The most important books on Morita therapy are, of course, the writings and records of the words and actions of Dr. Masatake Morita himself.
These include “The Complete Works of Masatake Morita” (Hakuyosha edition, 7 volumes) and other single volumes.
While Dr. Morita’s own works, such as “The Radical Cure for Neurasthenia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder,” “How to Cure Social Phobia,” and “The Psychology of Love,” are very interesting, the records of the physical therapy sessions, the question-and-answer sessions with patients, the guidance on patients’ diaries, the diaries of hospitalized patients, and the dialogues with Dr. Morita are also extremely fascinating. The way Dr. Morita, based on his own philosophy of humanity and life, and his understanding of neurosis, encourages and guides these neurotic patients during their hospital stay and daily lives, can be felt as the origin and starting point of Morita therapy.
Checking my bookshelf, I found that currently, the only works primarily recording Dr. Morita’s own words and actions are the following four:
1. “A Radical Cure for Neurosis and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder” by Shoma Morita, Hakuyosha
2. “How to Cure Social Phobia” by Shoma Morita (edited by Takehisa Takara), Hakuyosha
3. “The Path to Self-Awareness and Enlightenment: For Those Suffering from Neurosis” by Shoma Morita, edited by Keiji Mizutani, Hakuyosha
4. “Words of Shoma Morita Living in the Modern Age II: Living as a New Self” edited by Seikatsu Hakkenkai, Hakuyosha
I haven’t read these books in many years, but I think I’ll read them again when I have some free time.
